Help with Fig with black pebble topping (beginners question)

Hi,
My wife just bought a fig from a nursery for a gift and it has a black pebble topping that looks like its stuck together. The nursery person told her it is water soluble glue, and it does break apart, however being a gift to a friend who has no idea, I am thinking if it is better to repot it? I only have Hortico all purpose potting mix and kitty litter. Would it be ok for me to use this mix or should I just leave it in the original pot?. I have a picture of the fig topping to see if anybody knows what it is.
Thanks for any advice given.

The black pebbles are glued in so that the soil and tree don't fall out during transportation. Definitely remove the rocks and glue.

As for the soil, it depends on how complex you want to make it.

ok thanks for that, so I can just remove all the rocks and just leave it as it is? or would i need to put some other pebble mix onto the top? This will be given to my friend today and will just endure a half hour drive in the car...

The rocks are just a top dressing for presentation really.

::EDIT::
Sorry mate, was in the middle of lunch. I would definitely remove them.
