Treat my Japanese Maples just like my Tridents.
Keep them watered and fertilised well, Keep the out of our drying winds in Summer.
Wire them at the start of winter so you can leave it on for an extended time. Beware wiring now or thru the growing season as the wire will cut in quickly.
Watch when you prune, Leave a little of the cut branch so to allow for die back the the next node. If you are maintaining a tree in show, or near final condition then pinch back the new growth to to 2 leaves to develop ramification.

Enjoy and care for them and you should get some nice colour in Spring and Autumn where you are

Dunno what the other one is but post some photos

Ken

hey mate depending on where you are depends on how ya look after them,
in my ase queensland i have to make sure it gets shaded for part of the day or it will dry out to much. the delicate leaves burn really easy in the wind so try and keep it sheltered in some way. dont let the soil dry right out, will kill the tree quick smart, but dont overwater either wet feet can do just as muh damage. feed it like any other maple i presume!
thats what i do any ways.

KC good advice there too

as for the tree mate, good starter. it is very uniform in thickness which is fine for japanese maples. depending on what you want you can either develop it from here and create the top or do a few air layers and get several!!!
other wise for now i would ground plant it and let it run free for a bit just do selective pruning to create your shape! :D
