Trident maple design

Hey guys I got this great trident from shibui. Im wanting to use these two leaders to create a fork in the trunk, my question is after I let them grow out a bit am I able to cut a V in the stump to make the transition into the fork look natural? Any other ideas on styling would be great,

I think going for a V-Cut would be the best way to go to achieve your desired outcome...Although it looks like it has been chopped recently, the new shoots seem to be quite young , so I'd be waiting another season to let them harden off first before going ahead. Wait & see what others on the forum suggest as I'm sure there are other options to achieve what your looking for.
Hey I can see a few other Tridents in the pic...Looks like you also picked them up from Shibui. Would love to see the pics. If they have the same base flare as the one that you have in pic then your going to have some fantastic bonsai in the future.

For me personally...I'd probably be going for the left branch in pic to be my main leader & train the right branch as my first bottom branch. Pic's from all sides would be great to see so that all can offer styling suggestions.

would be interesting to know what kind of fork you have envisioned ie. two equal trunks, 1 dominant and 1 inferior, main trunk and a fat first branch, etc. coincidentally i am also going for a twin trunk style with my trident, though i have made the stronger leader (and straighter one) the main trunk, and the other more 'shaped' one the inferior.

Sounds like you want broom style with both trunks heading upward so V cut will be a good approach. The fork is probably a bit high for good twin trunk. These new shoots are generally not very well attached so it is easy to break them off at the base. I'd agree with BF - let them grow and harden off before trying to cut between them so there is less chance of breaking one or both. Might be able to make the cut by Jan or Feb but will depend how they develop.
I don't grow maples as broom style. I think they look better as informal upright.
