This is one of three that I saved from neighbors yard at the same time as the English Elms I wanted ID on a while ago.
Trunk on this one seemed an 'OK prospect which I just cut back hard to 'NO greenery with a 'grow or die' order.
The other pair are more forest style and growing..With these though I'm in two minds as to 'thin out branches at soil level or just cut their heads of and see if I get the same result with 'hardwood' budding..'I had better make a choice soon as the copper colored foliage although growing are not my aim.

Pot is 'Chinese Oval....430x350x100mm.
All drain holes were re-cut to 30mm plus an extra (4) at 30mm.
Also (4) added wiring hole were cut at 5mm.(NO wet feet)

Root span at soil level is 240 mm(Front)
Trunk 140mm at soil level (Front)
Circumference of Nabari is 340mm


( I alter all my pots this way with Diamond hole cutters from 2mm to 30mm)



As a side note I purchased (2) hole cutters (US made) 10/15 mm for $9 each ...cut one hole with 10mm and it fused. Two and a half with the 15mm and it shattered and smashed a pot....Ordered (2) sets 2/3/5/8/10/15/20 and 30mm from China ($11.00 free delivery a set) and have re-cut 102 pots with most cutters on their 30th hole or more...just saying.)

You can't possibly do anything with that , has absolutely no future as a bonsai . Tell you what , free of charge I'll come and take it away for you . That looks very nice firecat it's going to be a very nice tree in time , I agree with the front you've chosen

Great base for bonsai and the trunk width to tree height ratio is also great. Very bright future.

Also thanks for the positives so far...I do like this 'little Box... the pot well the future will tel on that.

14 days since posting..Budding is going well..A bit of feeding and good watering and someones trash is keeping me interested.

Progression of my Buxus after a complete defoliation with a couple of larger branches removed prior Christmas.
The other buxus clumps back in this post have gone via the recycling bin as die back removal led to shapeless trees that had no future..

Almost a year on with Spring time budding coming out.
Hard pruned over Autumn with a couple of guy wires to pull it around a bit.
Brittle as as all will know but a tweak here and there did a bit.
Roots are doing fine and I chopped out a couple of 'jins'.(really don't think excess dead wood was needed)

Here's a bakers dozen of the progression.

I have been playing around with a few as well mature ones. I just can't get it to backbud on old wood mainly on the main trunk. What are you feeding these. I get quite healthy growth but only on the branches.

Bon I've been just been clipping out side shoots opposite as a clip and grow sort of idea.
Fertilizer is 'SEARLES 5 in 1' pellets (which I use on everything bar Gardies and Azaleas)
I sweep back 1/2 inch soil and push it below with a chopstick and re-top with soil.
Fed over winter a bit extra in my shade mesh fertilizer baskets.
Top dressed a couple of times with 'SEARLES Native Tree' and just water that in.
Haven't sourced another store for the 'SEARLES' brand but it may still be available at Masters.
Smaller trees I crush up '5 in 1' in a Mortar ( which raised a few eye brows when I posted my new bench )

Thanks Steve. I think my ones just need feeding that's all. I'll go feed them. Will start another thread soon for my ones.

Just an update on my Buxus.
To me it's progressing well since last posting in September.
A little wiring and a very light prune to establish pad location.
Center apex will be grown up a bit more before flattening out new branches.

filling in nicely--third photo-- that straight root could be removed or bent down into the soil at next repot

I'm digging up a hedge of these over the Summer. This gives me hope. Love the progression, it's going to be a bonza tree!
