Hey all
Im new to bonsai and i just purchased by first tree to begin the process and learn however I'm a little unsure as to go about it.
It is a jade tree with a really nice thick trunk

I'm thinking of removing one of the thick branches (air layering it to get another plant out of it)


However I'm unsure as to which direction I should have it. I'm inclined to remove the right branch (as the left one allows the nice flow form the trunk to the left branch)
I am a little concerned with the scared wood in the center of the trunk.


Will the branch be able to thicken up to allow for a more proportional grow from trunk to branch?

Any any advice on how to go about it would be fantastic

In your 4th picture I would take the first left hand branch off. It should just strike as a cutting - I am pretty sure if you try and air layer a jade it will just rot. They are more like a succulent than a tree so the air layering process won't work. Always think of movement and prune accordingly.

So you'd cut here at the purple line?


And just have it look like the trunk?

Firstly where do you live? if you live in a sub-to tropical area,don't do anything in the winter.Put you jade in the sun,and keep very dry.Remove the tray underneath, and water lightly once a week,Jade are tropical ,from S,Africa.Whichever branch you remove,do it in the summer. ie Oct.Leave the cut branch on the bench ,to dry for 1 week.Plant in a week later,in course mix.Do not water until you see new growth developing, then start your usual watering regime,ONCE a week only.In full sun.....

Also generally keep your plants away from the condenser unit fans... Can dry them out when it's on

Yes I would cut that branch off and then follow up the trunk and cut at the next junction to give it more movement, and so on. Leave it until it is a bit warmer if you are in Melbourne

I just collected a heap of Jade that were being thrown out.
Just stick them in an pot of soil and keep moist. They should root easily.

wait till warmer weather in spring unless you have a green house there.

take the straighter of the 2 trunks (the purple one yep), off to give movement and taper into the other one and then shrten that one too to a branch. Wire that a the new leader

You guys are really really helpful. It's fantastic to have the help of people like you guys.
I'll wait to warmer months to do some pruning but I will start by removing at the purple cut line. And then work my way through the tree to create a framework
I'll upload progress photos as I go by

Any added advice would be greatly appreciated

Give it a go mate.

There are a few forest planting threads around the forums with guidelines and things. I'll have a browse on my lunch break and post some links.
