Hi All, I was about to trim up the foliage of this Kunzea I have. However it has come time to do something more serious. It needs a major clean up.....
So the big questions, which branches to go, which side for the front ,maybe a change in planting angle.????????

I really like the first picture because it shows the 'twirl' of the trunk down low. I'd try to change the top of the tee to come back over the base... First impressions for me is its unbalanced and leaning over too much.

But it's a lovely tree, wish I had your problem!

Great looking base and movement in the trunk,

I see what Elmar means by the tree feeling unbalanced at the moment, however rather than cut back, I suggest getting some wire onto it and giving it a style something similar to this
I think you have the branching/foliage mass to achieve something in between these 2 trees, and I think it would make a beautifully balanced tree,

That...... or sell the tree to me ........ seriously

No not mine,

First tree is by Harry Harrington, second is by Ryan Neil

Pic 1 for the front - as it moves toward you and presents the lower trunk 'features' best. Not sure how brittle the upper trunk section is (?) but if you can get some movement into the straight section and at the same time bring the foliage mass back over the pot, running the branches lower. Thats my of ideas ... many possibilities though ...

Prefer the second pic as the front, The twist in the trunk is coming forward in that one and looks more welcoming to me.

the only branch I think i would remove is the second one as it comes off the first branch it looks like. Remove that will separate the foliage areas i think.

Pic 2 as the front for me, the base seems a lot nicer with that bend in the trunk (although I could just be the lighting). Also as the branches run into the foliage they also seem to me to sit a lot nicer and less leggy in pic 2 due to the lower foliage (Seems leggy due to how far the tree sits out to the side.) Either way you've got yourself a great tree Are you able to bring the trunk back across a bit, or would the it be too brittle? This virt is just an idea as you said you were considering a major change (with a cleanup of the foliage).

I'd go for front 1. I'm assuming there's no chance of getting a bend into the trunk up to the point where it separates. Can the smaller sub-trunks be bent at all? If so, maybe then wire and twist the low sub-trunk into something like the base of the trunk - seriously funky - and then see what you could do with the others to harmonise with it. Only once you've twisted and turned the sub-trunks as much as you can, would you decide that you can't make anything out of one of them, and maybe cut it. I can see it as windswept, so all battered but in the end, near horizontal. Please keep posting - I have a feeling you already know what you want to do with it.

Well two years latter and another re-design ,had some spare time and have given it a complete work over .Have not trimmed branches to length ,will cut back once it picks up steam. Starting to look what you originally suggested Kerrin.

I have not had any luck with Kunzea and having branches below the horizontal
