Hi all, I was in Sydney recently and picked up this Elm from Ray Nesci's for an excellent price Thought I would do a general tidy up and arrangement while its still in leaf.
Trying for a more natural look as Ive realised there are a lot of nice specimen deciduous trees still styled like Pines Im hoping to keep the canopy nice and open to let light in, still a few more branches that need a tweak and a lot of twigs to cut back and ramify. Maybe a few more years and into a pot for this one

Rays got some killer stock, only a couple of these big guys left and some smaller ones, all great prices - I was very impressed with my visit

that must be huge. Can definitely see it with a large broom style canopy, reminiscent of figs.

That is some really nice stock that will look great with a bit more work coupled with a nice pot!

Great stock. For me I would like to see the canopy brought down a little lower-only because I feel the height draws your eye away from the base and awesome trunk. I think you can still keep that natural look.

This material needs to be treated with great respect. It is very good! (from what I can make out)
But I implore you to forget the wiring and form branches sloooooooowly with the hand tools.
As Isitangus wrote, cut back harder and build those branches slowly! Also, I would remove the low young branch on the right.
Could be a very specieal tree!

Damn, I was eyeing that tree when I was there on Sunday.
Can't wait to see what you'll do with it in years to come as it is a killer piece of stock that was selling for a good price.

I agree with both opinions. The canopy will be lowered in time. For now its just a light wiring job to bring the primary branches into place, the teritiary branching will all be clip and grow. Ive done a bit more thinning since the original photos and will document how the tree responds. Will be taking things slowly as Ive heard different reports about Hokkaido Elms with regards to die back and slow growth. This is a trunk Im willing to spend a lot of time on.

Early bird gets the worm hehe, it took me awhile to come to a decision with this stock. I spent a good half hour in the rain trying to decide between this and the other 3 big Hokkaido's. Should have snapped them all up!

Doing my best with this slow growing species, it gets smashed by mealy bugs in the warmer months. Need to round out the canopy a little more and kill the moss on the trunk. A few more years to go...
