Hi guys,

I have moved to Karratha and have seen some wonderfull trees while driving around.

I was hoping some one on here could tell me if it is legal to collect trees from the area ?

I am also unfamiliar with the trees that grow here and would love to here people's opinions on which species could successfully collected and make good bonsai.

The only tree I can think of is leptospermum and I'm not even sure about that.

Not Legal, unless you have a Licence, for the purpose of collecting.

Unless things are different in WA, it may be legal to collect on private land, with the permission of the owner. The major issue is that in arid areas the roots will go down deep, and nothing you dig will survive. Some growers feel strongly that nothing should be taken from the wild, unless it has a bulldozer revving up beside it. Please take photos of interesting trunk and branch shapes, for us city folks. What you see can be invaluable for shaping the trees you grow from nursery stock.

  forgot to mention that, but if it is declared even then it is a no no. You have to know what is and what is not, ignorance will not be accepted as an excuse.

Ok guys thanks,

Yea I wouldn't like my chances of collecting trees here and having them live.

I might have to settle for garden trees if I can find some.

I will post some pictures if I com across anything special.

Anyone know if fig trees grow well here I haven't seen any about.?

Welcome to the forum and the Pilbara. Lucky for you you have a nursery in your back yard that stocks a verity of plants that grow well up here including natives. Pointsiana Nursery, if memory serves me correctly... Plus there are heaps of Bougainvilleas in Karratha that you would be allowed to take some cuttings of. Most people don't mind as long as it's on the outside of their fence.
Cheers
