Leptospermum Petersoni Windswept

Hello Everyone,

First of all, wishing you all a fantastic new year, and thank you again so much for the wealth of knowledge you all share.
I have acquired a Lepto Petersoni almost a year ago. After a severe chop it thrived and I decided yesterday to start training it. Considering the trunk curve and as it only has one shoot so far, I believe a windswept is the style i want to go for in the future... Would another style be suited for this tree? Also, I am wondering the chances of getting new shoots of the trunk?
Thanks again,
Pierre

Happy New Year Pierre,

I think your tree could be most upright styles, including windswept. I like the idea of the branch being used to create a new top by bending it to into a gentle curve to eventually follow the general line of the current trunk. The result would be rather Eucalypt.

Yes new shoots could be gained lower on the trunk on L. petersonii - but they will probably be fairly uncommon so I would tend to make best with what has already become available.

One recommendation for bending the new branch and trunk is to wrap it firmly with grafting tape or self-amalgamating tape prior to wiring into place. This is something I have started using for difficult to bend Leptospermum (e.g. L. wooranooran) this last year and I have been happy with the success. It reduces breakage and where cracks occur they heal well as they are protected from drying out. This species will bend a bit better than some of the others Leptospermum.

have fun

Here is a very sketchy example of the kind of shape I like for this type of tree. Your taste of course is a purely personal choice. A

Thanks for your input and time for the sketch, much appreciated. I have to admit i didn't really consider the informal upright...
Thanks for the tip on how to bend Lepto. Will have a better look at the tree again tomorrow and bright day light...

Looks to be quite similar to one I collected a few months ago and is now recovering.

Similar lower trunk with a single bunch of foliage and branching around where it was chopped before.
not yet time to look at styling for mine, so interested in how this one develops.
