Although the exact species as yet I could not tell you.
This was growing in a rock pocket on a flat rock creek bed.
I have had it for three months and simply got it into some potting medium and watered and fertilised, should have a very viable future as a bonsai

Hi Watty, I congratulate you on your success at finding, digging and keeping alive a very nice piece of yamadori.
The way that trunk exits the soil and moves upwards is very inspiring and I like it.

Heaps of character. One can't really tell from photos but from the photos I would consider making it a shohin and concentrating on the trunk base. But then again, seeing the tree eye to eye could change the whole idea. But whatever, really NICE find. Good one.

With many thanks to a keener eye than mine (Onya' Ash) I stand corrected on this and is probably a Lepto not a Mel.
Been down to have another look and crushed some leaves, something tells me definitely Lepto (unless I am corrected again)
Don't know if that was ignorance, impatience, haste or a bit of all three, Embarrassed at such a learners mistake.
Took some close up of the new shoots for confirmation,

This was done about a month or so ago and of course there is always a story to tell, particularly why it took me so long to post it up.
On my way back from Bundy where I taken the tree for a friend to view and wire I had to stop in at Sarina and pick up some stuff for dinner, on my wife's request. Anyhoo second stage of my journey and tree is safe on the front floor and shopping is safe on the front seat, yeh, you guessed it, had to brake hard during the 20min drive and chicken thighs flew off the seat and directly onto said bonsai. Well it did flatten out some of our wired branches and yes it cracked the first branch off to the left but I think because it was wired it cracked but did not break and has bounced back with as much new foliage as the rest, might leave that bit of wire on for a bit though, it has weakened the branch.
Anyhoo this is how it looks now, another season or two and it should come up real nice.
