Hi,
When it comes to air layering, is the technique bad for the lower part of the tree?
Like, does the air layered section intercept nutrients destined for the bottom segment?

If the tree your layering will normally grow back on hard wood you should be okay. Look at the photo which explains the rules for layering on the same trunk. All of the layers and the host tree survived and grew very well.

If you are layering a species that normally doesn't grow back on hard wood, and there is no growth below the layer, the layer will grow okay, but you may not get grow back on the host tree. Occasionally you may get some new growth, but you can't guarantee that happening.
