Collected Small Leaf Privet

I bought myself a reciprocating saw recently (needed to cut some sections out of some Ikea furniture) so decided to give the new toy a go with collecting. Makes it a hell of a lot easier.
Don't get a lot of privet around here, more Camphor and Celtis, so when I found these I decided I'd try out the saw.
So I'm not familiar with bonsaing privet (pretty sure this is small leaf privet) though I understand they are tough? Do I need to leave some leaf on? Let it get established, or can I make a brutal trunk chop right away?
Cheers
