Is this just Mycorrhizal growth or a problem ?

Hard to say. I have seen it before but not often. There are many spp of mycorrhiza and sometimes more than one will inhabit the same tree. Pathogenic fungi tend to be microscopic so I would say its harmless. It may be growing on the organic matter in your mix and not symbiotic at all.

Mycorrhiza usually forms in the soil on the tips of roots. This is not mycorrhiza.

I cant say whether it is bad for your tree though as I don't know what it is, but I doubt that it is any good for it. Perhaps this side was in the shade or against a wall? If so, remember to turn your trees every week.

Don't forget that even mycos have fruiting bodies that eventually break the surface to disperse their spores.

I got rid of as much of it as I could to be safe & ill see how I go.

If your tree looks healthy,you need not worry,remember your tree is the ultimate judge.

And as treeman alluded to, these are just fruiting bodies of the fungus. The actual plant? mycelia is all through the soil and/or roots. Only a fungicide will get rid of it.
I tend to agree with Anthony though - If it was a problem your tree would look sick by now.

Mycelium will also be white like what you commonly see michoryzal fungus to be.

Both are beneficial to root and soil health.


If I ever get shrooms coming up in te pot though, I usually water just pluck them
Off of take them back into the soil.

Mostly these types of fungus (mycelium in particular) but also these large fungi , are feeding ok woody and log offed material in the mix, or dead or dying/decomposing parts of the roots or tree.

The tree is definately nice and healthy so I won't worry about it. Thanks for the advice
