Air layer Trident Maple

Hi,

Got my self my first Trident Maple on the week end and I was going to air layer the top of the tree off.

When is the best time to put the air layer on? I'm guessing I have to wait till it gets closer to spring when the buds start opening.

Thanks
Michael

Ha ha it's not that tropical up here Ken. Tridents, Japanese Maple and Chinese Elm all lose their leaves - we just don't get the colour like you guys get down south. I would probably leave it until it gets new buds in Spring.

Trident maples can be reluctant to form roots on air layers and one of the members here has developed a technique to ensure success. You can do a search and should find some info or contact RayM by pm and purchase a little book of his that has the procedure outlined in detail.

Yes, it's very good and for a mere $15 it's money well spent!

"its less than a packet of cigarettes!" lol

Thanks for the info just wanted to make sure that my thinking of time was correct, will wait till it gets closer to spring.

I have air layered Japanese maple with no issues before are they similar or is it harder to layer a trident?

Easier
I do them year round here :-)
They only go deciduous for about a month, so will put a layer on when I have time. Keep warm and sheltered and tey will take off early in spring.

Hi Michael,
The advise you have received is correct. Wait until you see new buds forming and you will have a new tree in a couple of months if you do the layers correctly.
Sorry Ken, please don't shoot me.  Trident maples are notorious for callusing. You don't have the same problems with Japanese maples.

Regards Ray

I have done a lot of Air layering on different types of trees with great success with the ring bark technique.

Are you using the same technique kcpoole?
I have seem a lot of different ways to do it but have note tried a lot of them.

How do tridents go with grafting roots, i'm guessing air layering would be faster?

This is the tree I want to air layer I have put the red line of where is was thinking, well I was thinking a bit lower but then I thought it might be safer leaving a branch on the lower section just in case it does not shoot back.

I was going to cut most of the branches off and restart everything in spring,

You don't want to air layer above that where the trunk thickens and use the branch directly above your red line as a new leader ? That is how I would do it :2c:

Yea I was thinking the same thing around 5 min of posting that the thicker branch above the red line would give better taper and movement.

Is it a good time to plant cuttings as I might cut off what is not needed?
