Truncheon cuttings

This are my truncheon cuttings. Why I want to post them is to show you the size of cuttings I take since it is much faster than small ones, and it is possible.
Airlayers are not always possible, and some time it is better to resort to truncheons. So far I had very good results. I actually dont remember loosing any...but that is because I forget things I dont want to remember. :palm:
I am naturally a hoarder...so I can not throw easily a cutting...as a result...I probably have....(please dont laugh) 10000 or more. But I give away freely...and planted the gardens of all my neighbors. Started planting their gardens long time ago...so my neighbors will not hesitate to let me dig anything from their gardens...and if anything needs to be removed they ask me first if I want it.
Also my kids are in real estate...so they build houses for rent and sale...many! So most of my plants are designated for those houses and that makes me happy.
When do I take them? Which time of the year? Most of the time...We dont have real winter here...so perhaps in winter I slow down...but juniper cuttings root best in winter.
I dont use any rooting hormone...but use occasionally honey...I plant everything in coarse sand, and some difficult ones cover with plastic dome.
So far I managed to root everything...just the % are different...If I really want something I just take more cuttings.
Some plants do better from small cuttings some do better from truncheons.
I have been doing this for the past 30 years...I used to have 3 garden centers that I grew everything for myself. Now I closed them long ago and decided to rest...but it seems resting is not that good for me...and I might open them again...or just one to keep me busy.
The trick with truncheons is to take long cuttings...the bigger the diameter the longer the cutting I take. Some I take up to 1m long...
Here is a picture I took in an African village...This are assorted poles cut from the bush, and stuck in the ground.Notice that most of them are growing.

My biggest reason for having so many bonsai is that I am restless...I will kill them trimming them oftem, if I have only few....so I realized better to have many to spread the torture to many trees, and reduce it to individual ones. But I am proud to say...I have cooled down a bit...or maybe is the winter that slowed me down...
Here is a branch of a fig I chopped of a tree at our game ranch...it rooted...and I removed probably 6 airlayers from it...it was huge...maybe 25cm at the base.

Some branches from it I just stuck in the ground:

Here it is after removing the last airlayer from it...

Here is a 6-7 meter cutting I was given from a ficus religiosa.
I chopped it...(my gardener cut it too short segment) and it was in autumn...so lets hope it will come up. Will keep you updated. I put Vaseline on top of the cuttings and sulfur at the bottom.

and now it is coming up...this is the narrow side of the cutting.

This bougies are near my house and they are building there. They will be dug out...I wanted to dig them but they just too big. The base must be like 1m, so I just chopped few branches. Hope they will root.
You can see the foundation behind it

The pavers are 20x10cm

Wow Neli, they are some thick cuttings! Don't worry, every workshop or meeting I go to, I leave with a bag full of cuttings, I can't help myself! I now have a pocket in my bonsai bag just for a spare bag, because I always end up leaving with that bag filled with cuttings

Your garden looks great! I wish I had the room for that many cuttings! I'd have thousands too :)

thankyou for sharing!!

I must say I'm intrigued by your methods and situation there. Do you have a gardener to assist you?

Thanks for sharing Neli, that's a whole lot of cuttings you've got going on! I'll show my wife the pics and maybe she won't complain as much about my cutting habit.

Have you tried any leaf reduction or bonsai techniques on the bauhinia? I've been thinking about trying one. I've seen a white-flowered one with smaller leaves too. The flowers are so beautiful, it would make a striking bonsai in full flower.

Wonderful Posting Neli, :tu:
All good, but the one I'm most intrigued by is your attempt to grow casuarinas from cuttings.
We don't have much success with that particular species over here..maybe I should've said "I" instead of "we".
Will watch with interest..
Cheers.......Brian
