New creation

A local nursery had some "Bonsai Starters" up for sale. I picked out this Japanese Juniper(that's what the label said), for only $8.95. I thought it was about time I tried to create something from scratch, rather than acquire stock which has been given direction by someone else.

About 10mm thick at the soil line

Wired and twisted.
Now then, when should this be planted in the ground? Do I have to wait until spring? I also bought a nice little cascade Juni, but have not wired that one up yet.

Hi Raymond,

Might i suggest using a larger wire and tightening the bends. As things grow, especially in the ground, movement is softened.

Wonder what makes it Japanese lol! Looks like regular Juniperus Chinensis to me. Could be Japanese though who knows!

Great advice from Jow here and maybe you should wire out your main branching :?:

Cheers for the reply. I'm not sure which branches I want to keep. I am simply after some basic movement and a bit more girth before styling...

Normally junipers are wired when younger and with very tight curves...I suggest you wire the top part...very tight...see some examples of Japanese junipers and then air layer that part later.
For the bottom part, use the trunk for a short distance only, then use a side branch as leader and wire that hard. You will get taper and good movement.
