Morning all,

The in laws have a large tree with red berries on it. I've seen lots of bonsai with similar looking berries. So I'm hoping this is a good bonsai species.

Also if suitable when would be the best time to put an air layer onto this?

I'd say this is some sort of cottoneaster.
Not the usual species to bonsai though.
If I'm no mistaken these leaves are a lot larger than most.

This is definitely a cotoneaster.
My guess is C. glaucophylla. It is one of the weedy species of cotoneaster and in my area grows on roadsides and most unmanaged land around towns and old farms.

Apart from it being weedy I don't think its growth habit would make the best bonsai but I have seen a couple of reasonable bonsai specimens. Because you can collect relatively advanced trunks you can practice and learn some advanced techniques even if it doesn't turn out to be the worlds best bonsai.

Just try not to let the birds spread the seeds.

yes, a cotoneaster hybridus pendulus tree. I have them growing wild in my garden. meant to add weeping cotoneaster. That is what my research has shown and i have been wrong before but 100% Cotoneaster.

Thanks all. I might give a air layer ago at the start of spring and make a practice tree out of it (if it works).

Might be able to graft the nice cotoneaster variety onto the trunk one day. Gotta have a go at grafting first on something. Looks difficult!
