Hi All

I've got the bonsai bug and decided to spend some cash at Baloc's. I must say he was extremely helpful and patient!

I wanted to get a good start on shaping it before the next workshop at the local club. Any advice would be appreciated!

Also I put a heap of the cuttings in a propagating tub. Do you think I will have any luck this time of year?

Hope this shows up ok off my ipad!

Hi Andy. Should be no problem striking juniper cuttings this (or any) time of year. In fact I put in a few shimpaku cuttings today as well. Might take a few weeks longer to get roots now it is cooling down.

Your tree has plenty of branches so you should be able to create just about anything from it. I can't get a 3d idea of where all those branches come from and go to but be prepared to remove a few to leave room for the ones you keep.

I pretty much decided the right lower branch will be the first branch. If I kept branch A it would be opposite of the first branch. Branch C would be a back branch.

Would you ever keep both?

I find your question unclear??? not sure which 'both' you are referring to. Keeping the low right branch, branch A and C would give a 'safe', run of the mill tree which is probably good for a beginner. Remove B and possibly D to leave some room for light to reach the remaining branches.

Shibui, sorry after re reading my comment it was difficult to follow. But your response regarding the branches was what I was after.

I've cutoff a few branches but left many towards the top. I was planning on chopping the trunk closer to the time I pot it in July to help encourage it to keep growing.

Do you think it would be ok to complete the pruning in May including trunk chop and put into bonsai pot in July?
