Hi Guys,

I was hoping someone with a bit more experience with trident maples could jump in and give me an opinion on these bad boys....

Sorry about the picture quality, they will all require major cut backs but the trunks are all around the size of a coke can

I'm thinking of grabbing the first one and potentially the third one.

Does anyone see potential in these? or are the first major branches too far up to create good taper? or will the scarring be too dramatic?

Hi baddabing888 , they all have potentual and big scars heal they just take time . They appear to have some small shoots lower down so they could be chopped back hard .

Number 1 , i would remove the straight leader trunk at the base , that would give you a very nice "S' shaped trunk , the others are difficult to see clearly what steps to take . They could easily be layered to create more material if the taper didn't suit a particular style .

Its up to you yo see a tree/bonsai in there .

before any thing else check out the nebari- old Winkie saying -"bad nebari is the root of all evil"

I agree with both the previous 2 posts, so long as there is taper and movement, nebari can be fixed by grafting new ones on which many people say should be done regardless.
