Japanese Stone Lanterns have always fascinated me. This lantern is my carved-basalt oki-gata, a small moveable five piece lantern which stands only about two feet tall. When viewed at night the cross bars in the Hibukuro cast wonderfull radiating shadows which dance on the gravel garden. It marks the garden path back to the house from my shed where I like to work in the evening. If you have a stone lantern in your garden I would really like to see photographs of it both at day and at night.

I recently got one but have never lit it. What so you use..those little candles in the foil cups, i can't remember what their proper name is.
Love to know.

Hi Rudy,

I have used tea-light candles but they only last the night and you have to keep lifting the kasa and finial off to replace the candle. At the moment I prefer mini oil-burner lamps as shown in the picture, these are just 8 cm wide and tall and last for ages.
You can adjust the size of the flame and you can fill them with oils such as citronella oil to keep insects away. The glass one on the left is from a laboratory supplier (Livingstones I believe) and being clear, it would suit a pale coloured lantern. The black ceramic one on the right is from Bunnings and is the one I use in the black basalt lantern photographed above. You can't even see it in the day time. They are cheap, only about $5.

Hi Rudy,

The black oil lamp from Bunnings came with a low-grade synthetic kernmantle wick and produces soot which sticks to the underside of the roof of the lantern (it washes off with a jet squirter on a hose). Hence I use that one in the black lantern where soot won't be noticed much. Check on the oil you use and look for a full round braid cotton wick for the least smoke and soot.

If you are in Victoria and can pick up - there is also a seller on Gumtree http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/sunshine ... 1041202023 who is selling very reasonably priced small sized granite lanterns in two styles. As Steven said, Dawastone in Sydney is one of the main importer of new granite lanterns from Chinaand carry a large range of styles and sizes. Edo Arts http://www.edoarts.com.au/templates/edo ... egoryID=18 (also in Sydney) stock some very large specialty granite lanterns imported from Kyoto including some superb antiques. My basalt lantern was from a local supplier who imports from Indonesia and Malaysia.
