Looks like great stock to me.

But seriously, they are good stock, particularly the firt one

Nice taper and better movement in the trunk than is often the case. They still have needles reasonably close to the base of branches so there is still opportunity to prune back and get new shoots to build some real branches but they do need pruning very soon. In a couple of months those older needles will drop then budding in those areas would be hit and miss - long bare branches do not look good. Now is an excellent time to prune black pines to get new buds.

I ended up grabbing the first one. More compact growth i might end up grabbing the 2nd one in a few weeks we'll see how it goes.

He threw in a a japanese maple that has quite bad leaf burn but looks to be about 15-20 years old but thats for another thread for $80 so wasn't too bad considering perth prices!

Bonsai Emporium - 9374 0555. Peter is the man, he has an awesome range of field grown stock, and a shade house full of babies. Michele is a lovely lady and both of them have helped me since I started out. I cannot recommend them highly enough. He also has a huge range of pots and all the necessary stuff we need. I can call him at any time and he helps me out with ideas and info, and he does all this for me and I live 2 hours away.

Couldn't agree more I'm lucky enough to only live around the corner from him.... and if I could, I'd live on the doorstep of the shop Will be dropping in this weekend if its not too hot

Neither of these two pieces of stock were on offer at Bonsai Emporium at that price.

@andrewf i would but baby steps i need to try and propagate some stock first once i really cut back the few i have i'll be using the cuttings to try and strike a few cuttings in late winter / early spring

@pup + raymond yes this is bonsai and bamboo stock which is cheaper but require more work, they should still have 2-3 similar ones and numerous other smaller ones at decent prices. If you like figs and junipers they have heaps!

yep peter is a top guy from bonsai emporium i've got some of his stock too slightly higher priced but much further along the line development wise and what you would call true pre bonsai stock vs nursery stock with potential. His also super helpful and even sold me an ice cream container of the fertaliser mix he uses but you can only usually buy in large quantities for peanuts which was really helpful. He also took the time to show me how to decandle a pine when i purchased some stock from him
