Hi All.....

I have a Cherry Plum which i was not very happy with the way it was growing so i decided to airlayer it.
As you can see the main trunk, that there is no taper to it. So i have decided to airlayer at the first bend where it is a little better starting point for the tree.

Also I decided to do a couple more airlayers on the other branches aswell, i was going to remove these branches anyways.
Each airlayer has a canopy of leaves above it to generate food, so im hoping that each one will root without any problems.

Whats the chances of this rooting with 3 airlayer nodes?

Anyone have any success with multiple airlayer?

Hi yamadorikid , mate there are several post here with multi layered trunks ,1 that i did a few years ago was "Multi Layered Zelkova" . If you do a search here there are bound to be more . I have multi layered Elms , Pines and maples all with success , so a plum should be a walk in the park so to speak .

Just a question....what happens if the cutout for the layer is not deep enough?

ie not getting to the past cambium?

will it still generate roots?

Nope the cambium will more likely heal over. It helps if the cuts are very neat and straight. If left stringy, its more likely to heal back over.

Maybe i should redo it a little deeper just incase.... it was only done yesterday....

so i doubt anything would of happened...

better now then, to check in 2 months and nothing has happend....heheh

Hi yamadorikid,
You have to remove all the cambium. Make sure you cut right down to the hardwood. You won't hurt the hardwood.
