My son, who got his first bonsai at an exhibition for the central coast bonsai society, at Erina Fair this year, was so pleased to get this port jackson fig from the show. Now he calls them plants, not bonsai. But he loves his little fig, and waters it once a week. Every time we visit Ray Nesci's bonsai nursery, I say he can have 1 $4 starter, and he gets all excited trying to sift through a million, to find that elusive one bonsai to call his. If he does finally get into bonsai, then I am thankful that he will have a massive collection passed onto him from me. It is a great age to get them interested.



We often go into the national park behind our house on the Central Coast, and he loves to walk for about 4 km up and down mountains, which is really good for his age 5. He saw this giant 'plant', which he now calls a tree finally, but he saw this and said 'Wow, look at that tree getting squished by the rock Daddy!' I asked him if he wanted to sit up there, but he was scared at first, but then finally summoned the courage. He doesn't understand the beauty of walking through the national park yet, but he does think its fun to do it with Daddy, so that is all that matters.



He just loves going for bushwalks, and hopefully finding 'boys on bikes', to see the teenagers flying past on dirt bikes. At least he finds time to always stop and pick the flowers... then tries to carry them home for Mummy. So cute.



We just had a baby girl called Isley (eye-lee), so I went and purchased a seedling for her to start as well, which Bowie and I call the Isley plant.

Good work getting your little guy started early-my 5yr old also loves his plants-bonsai starters and also lives growing from seed (sunflowers etc)

My Daughter ( now 14) was the same.
Now she is a Teenager has lost interest but hope she will pick up again in a few years.
At lest she knows what it is all about, so has a good head start.

My dad was always trying to get me passionate about plants when I was young, he used to manage a nursery and would have me working in there every weekend, helping out with everything. It never really took off with me whilst I was young, but when I hit my mid 20's, I found that I was starting to get interested in the garden, and that everything he'd taught me had sunk in, and is useful to me today.

So don't worry if they might lose interest for a while, because there is a good chance it'll come back down the track

Now the shoe is on the other foot, and I'm teaching my old boy about bonsai

I'm sure one day he'll be most grateful for the collection you're preparing for him
