I have grown these from root cuttings around 12 years from cutting and 8 in the ground. I put the best of them back in the ground for a bit more thickening and taper.

Thanks for the compliments, I would say anyone can grow this kind of stock with time, patience and a little knowledge.
Alpine have you only just started with rough bark elms ?. they thicken up fairly quickly its getting the taper which takes time, I find the root cuttings much quicker to develop than tip cuttings which seem to take ages to cork up.

Hi Craigw60 , mate most of the elms i had were Flakey bark .I have a couple of layered sections of the Rough Bark Elm but the reverse taper is still there after many years .All but gave up on layers , after seeing these i will chase up some rough bark elm roots for cutting and have a play .The root cuttings i have as cuttings are most likely flakey or smooth bark Elms after seeing these but then again who would know whats here .

Cheers Alpine
