Hi there crazy kids!!! For those of you who have ever propagated chinese elm root cuttings (I have just done it) , generally, how long is it before you see them starting to sprout? I am in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.

They will sprout about the time the other Chinese elms sprout in your area (maybe a little later?). First you will see little bumps around the cambium (between bark and wood) that will start to show a little green then shoots. Expect multiple shoots from all around the top of the cutting.

Hi John,ive done it and it was like 3 seasons. But our climate is diffrent than yours.

If you've just done it now, you should get some growth in about 3 months or possibly less. I have found all but the thinnest to be very obliging.

I was trying to remember back to when I did a bunch of them last year and couldn't remember the exact time, but what I can tell you is that they seem to grow slowly in the first year and then take off after that. At least, that's been my experience. Mine were between pencil thickness and finger thickness on average. Had a few thinner one's that did not make it though. Tough love was practiced. I also had some I put in my garden bed the previous year and they did pretty much nothing the whole year. I have a VERY sandy soil, so perhaprs that was a problem. I should dig em up and pot them into something else!

4-6 weeks mate if you did it in the start of August from what I have found.
I have taken a truck load of elm root cuttings and found that you should get a 130% strick rate
