You should try 'possoff'. I have not had to use it but it has been around for a while so must do some good.

Not serious but geez that sucks. I just got back from New Zealand where I was searching out the native parrots. A lot of the habitat gets really smashed by our possums over there, just like you have had happen here. Sorry to see it happen to your trees

camphore moth ball hangers and Garlic chilli spray worked for me

I'm gonna be trying everything. They've never been attacked before. I've only just moved them to this part of my yard, moved them back to their original positions as soon as I discovered them. I've had Acer palmatum eaten before, but never as badly as this. My biggest concern is that they might lose branches due to lack of foliage.. Hoping for spring to come fast and get these guys growing again before they withdraw sap.

Things are already acting like its spring up here on the boarder. I think spring is early this year, so I hope that helps your trees out.

That's , and the fact that it runs off garden hose and a 9v battery is a big plus - makes it portable/non-permanent, hope it works for you (and doesn't increase your water bill )

Hmmm, I have just noticed evidence of a possum at home for the first time in over 6 years.
I was thinking more and more that there must have been some good reason why they did not inhabit my part of town even though I have seen their droppings not 500m walk from me.
I was kind of happy to see him running about on the fence till now

I've had this problem before. Possum problem was so bad they even stripped the bark off my lime tree when everything else was gone. The thing is, once they have learned there is food in that spot they cannot be deterred. Poss off doesn't work if they have learned there is food there.

Really your option is to move them or cover them. Moving works well - possums seem very location sensitive. But avoid putting them on a fenceline or wall. Generally speaking possums don't like feeding from the ground. Ringtails never will, brushtails will but will naturally seek food higher up. Simply placing your trees on the ground some distance from where they were last attacked should prevent further attacks for awhile.

This is what I was going to suggest. Have heard they work quite well, and the shock of the 'water attack' may well discourage the possum on coming back

I would be building a little plastic hothouse for it (if you dont have a glass house) fertilising and misting it to promote foliage growth now.
