Repoting Japanese maple in winter ?

Hi all I have a few japanese maples I purchased early this year that are in desperate need of a repot.
Rootbound and the soil in both is like mud & always wet.
I've been very cautious not keep them out of contnuous rain but I'm worried about root rot etc

I know I should wait till buds start to open in spring but would love to get them out of this woefull medium ASAP !!

Is it safe for me to bare root & repot now in Melbourne ?

Thanks in advance

Ross

The people that wait for the optimum time are the people that are retired and have the time to do it, I think. I started all maples last weekend and will complete this weekend. If we're going to get a lot of rain over the next few weeks, I would just try to leave the trees out of it. Personally, I have never had a problem doing them now. I do use a very open mix if that helps?!

Ditto, have just doing a lot of repotting including maples and elms

From my understanding this is a good time to repot most plants except natives.

A very well respected bonsai nursery man advised repotting now as it gives the plants time to settle before bud burst. Also said there would not be enough hours at the optimial time to repot all the nurseries plants.

Most of the information on repotting is gleaned from the northern hemisphere. So when they speak of repotting the temperatures are similar to what we get in winter,
In most states.

So I would say no problems, but as always it is what you do after, that is more important. Not too much water ,wind, so protection from extremes.

I have just repotted a Ficus green island, what I have noticed was when it got watered the other morning, as I forgot to turn the sprinklers off, and we had a temp of 0.
There has been some leaf drop, but most of them are fine. So :imo: providing your after care is OK no problems. Remember most Rose bushes are sold at this time of year bare rooted.

Cheers Pup

Hi.

Well drained mix.

Keep from frost.

Place so to get most sun at this time of year.

Seasol, every three weeks.

This is my routine.

Regards
Irish. :aussie:

Would it be ok to repot now if its basically a stump?

Hi Craig, I come from Whangarei many years ago. I would have thought it very safe to repot palmatum there now. If I were you I would be up in the hills around somewhere like Pipiwai collecting radiata pines.

Tutukaka is a bit flat if you get into the hills where there is big cuttings in the roadside your'll find they have developed curves in the base of the trunks. Last time I was there I saw some rippers on the Helena bay hill rd but that was a couple of years ago and given the way they grow in northland they are probably too big now.
