Here's a shot that's a little better. Tree has spent the past week in the garage undergoing its first proper styling, it's had a few "maintenance styling" sessions in the 4 and a half years since I've dug it, but now it has found it's way. From here on in, it's on the road to bonsaihood. Another 4 and a half years and I'd hope to have it really looking the goods.

I have been considering grafting it with shimpaku and would go for it but need some strong healthy cheap stock to do it. Anyone want to donate some shimpaku to the cause? Or does anyone want to give their healthiest and biggest shimpaku a restyle in a few months time in order for me to use the offcuts for grafting?

That tree looks quite excited. .

Unfortunately I havnt any Shimpaku that need hard trimming.

Look forward to the results when you do get to do it though!

Im not sure about the pot - i love the design, it just seems a little too new and clean a pot.
There arent many bonsai 'rules' i adhere to, but the old looking tree - old looking pot is one i quite like. Perhaps if you dirtied it up a bit? Natural yogurt all over and a few months under your bench then a quick wipe down might be enough.
Im looking to score a big shimpaku soon, if that comes to fruition you can all the off-cuts.

The colour might be a little off, I assume it is more of a browny/tan than a green?

Yes, browny tan. I'd like a pot of these dimensions and this shape, but would like a traditional dark chocolate colour.

The reason I've kept the "excited" look is because the branch is alive and I've been hoping for it to shoot further back so that I can develop a low branch on it.

I don't mind the combo.

It doesn't scream match made in heaven but it is pleasing nonetheless.

Generally natural colour pots are more suited for conifers. Does it have a glaze? From the photo it looks like a matte finish which is more favorable for the tree.
