Hi,
Can anyone help me with this troublesome maple, the roots were one sided when i bought this. Ive got some maple whips, would an approach graft be the best [and quickest method] of creating decent nebari?

Thanks in advance.

I've tried approach grafting and thread grafting but favour thread grafting as I always seem to go too shallow on the groove for the whip to be inserted (approach).
Try these:

I would try a ground layer.
Just cut some of the bark away just below the surface, paint with hormone, walk away for two years.

Hi Andrew,
Maples thread craft very well. If you are interested in ground layering you may want to have a look at a post I did on this subject.

If you want to experiment, you could score the cambium a little, and wipe with rooting hormone and then pack sphagnum at the base and cove with soil, do this when you repot and plant it on a small slab, even a piece of plastic from an ice cream container or something, anything that will make the roots spread out first, and not down.
