We had to lay a new electric cable and this tree in winter dormancy was in the way. I tried to remove it with as much roots as possible and there were only 4 big(armthickness) roots I had to cut of to get the tree out. There are quite a lot of finer roots. I cut the trunk about a meter and a half from soillevel.

Ive put the tree on the ground in shade and packed some moist soil on the exposed roots.

There was'nt time to do anything else.

There are 4 sub-trunks wich were cut of yearly as you can see on the photo.

Any advice to what to do with the stump will be appreciated.

i have dug some of these and they responded well when i was in syd, and that's warmer than where i am now...

you're in sth africa, so you should'nt have to worry about the cold so much im thinking.

so if i had dug this one i would: cut all of the long roots with no feeder, cut off that really straight trunk, and maybe depending on whats under the soil, cut the heavier roots flatter. keeping as much feeder roots as possible.
who know's the other side might end up with a big cave section in it, i would look at carving the big trunk cut section later...

Thanks, Aaron. You confirm what I was thinking. I will go ahead tomorrow. I do have a brandnew hothouse. Should I put it inside? Sand or "normal" mix?

i would use my "normal" mix, maybe a little more sphagnum moss just around the rootball.

but be careful taking advice from people outside your local area regarding where to keep it...

see if someone in your local club can give you some more local advice
