Sort out the black pine stocks

hi all
i have been cleaning up the JBP stocks(all 200 of them) that i have grown since 2004. the trunks were bent in 2005 when they were two year old saplings and have been worked on in the last three years to keep the top controled and keep the bottom branches alive. the best ones with low sacrifice branch are in the ground. the ones i am show you now are at the stage that they are to be maintain and develop the branch structures, (thick branches are taken out, shorten back to inner bud to introduce taper into the branches, needles thinned out and shoot selected to two).

this is the first time that the branches are wired and i know they are not big and thick by any means, but the bark is starting to show age and the nebari on most of them are flaring out nicely. i am aiming for trees with the height of under 45cm with this batch. As the abundance of branches began to take shape, i expect the trunk to double in thickness in 3-4 years time. so i will keep you all posted to see if the plan eventuates. (for some reason the trees looked flat in the photos :lost: )

regards

Tien

Hey mate. Nice work. you should have some great pine stock in a few years. The trees look flat because you are shooting the flash directly at them. If the flash can be bounced of the ceiling for example, you will get a more natural photo.

Cheers,

ces

Hi bonsaisensations , mate in a few years time you will certainly have some very nice stock to play with . I have a few , not quite 200 , but the early development is looking good .

Cheers Alpineart

Good to see you the other day Tien, reminded how long it's been since I've dropped in. Good start on these trees. They will be great with a bit size. Will try to organise to drop by and see some of the Juni's. Are you open Monday??

Josh

yes Josh, we are open on Monday.

thanks alpineart and ces, like i said, i am trying to do something different to some other pine growers. i do believe by root pruning the tree early from seedling stage and regularly, you can develop nice nebari without the unsightly thick surface root if it is left unatended for too long. as for thickening the trunk, most people would have let the tree grow somewhat unchecked, but as a result, losing taper and low branches. so i like to take care of the basic structures of the branching, especially strengthen the low sacrifice branch to take off, thus only thickening the base and not ruining the taper. allow the rest of the tree to thicken naturally through the development and multiplication of branches and buds. that way none of the branches get out of control and ruin the taper.

like i said in the first post, instead of achieving thickening quickly through letting a few branches run, usually up the top, i believe i can achieve better result by creating more foliage mass through developing ramification of the branches. in other word, the thickening of the trunk and ramifying of the branches are achieve at the same time. result would be far less scar, tighter, cracklier bark when it ages naturally.

i will try to share some photos of this method in the coming days.

regards

Tien
