Hawthorne (Crataegus) from Collected Seed:

Does anyone have any experience propagating successfully from seed? I've collected seeds (pyrenes) from trees currently fruiting in Canberra and have just cleaned the seeds of any pulp. Following general info on the internet I'll dry the seeds out first, then store them in the fridge with damp sphagnum moss until Spring, then plant them out. Am I on the right track?

The mature specimens are planted in Canberra along Northbourne Avenue leading to the city centre. They're absolutely beautiful with a natural shape that looks very bonsai, and are now stunning covered in masses of red fruit. I'd like to grow them in my garden as normal trees too just to make jam, or tea...

If anyone would like seeds too, I'm happy to collect some for you - just PM me.

They are a grafted tree along Northbourne. Seed may not be true to type etc.

I wonder if local nurseries would have same grafted plants. I'd never noticed them on sale before. Still, I'll try growing the seeds just for the thrill. Do you know how best I should go about it? While I'm asking, do you know if they are easy to strike from cuttings?
