A few lucky people gathered on Sunday for an "all dayer" with visiting Japanese tutor "Yuske" We dicussed styling and techniques.We worked on our trees and we watched as yuske demonstrates his methods.Most impressive were these two shimpaku junipers. A great day which extended well into the evening.

Very cool shohin. Seems fairly rare to have a master working on small trees most seem to insist on large, high quality material, and usually collected at that. Of course, those both look like very high quality trees, just . . . small.

I think it is more the case of the better the material the better the end result. Hence when a visiting teacher comes out with good skills people tend to take the best stock they have access to.

It's that kind of stock that will keep them coming back to Aus. Nothing more embarrassing then to have a world class bonsai-ist being presented with ordinary stock. It's embarrassing for us and an insult to them.

Both good points, and I do agree. Though I would like to see some demos on more average material too, as it's what most of us have to work with. Of course, if I managed to get something world class, I think I would be afraid to do too much on it with my mediocre skills, so I would probably welcome the chance to have a visiting master work on it.

63pmp - the implications for Australian bonsai didn't cross my mind honestly. I live in the US, and I'm not too familiar with who comes down there and how often. I've seen a lot of amazing material on this site though, so I wouldn't think it would be too difficult to get some material that would not insult a master.

Anyway, didn't mean to hijack the thread. Looks like it was a really good workshop, and the two trees look amazing. Gives me some good inspiration for my little junipers.

Inspired by the work done on Sunday, I got stuckinto mine today.
Not the same quality material but the more it gets "worked" the better the development.
Still need to position the apex on the smaller one

Really love that second tree of yours, Gerard. The way the sashieda comes down low gracefully along the line of the trunk. Is Yuske doing any public demos or classes?

Yuske is on a working holiday and expects to remain in Australia for most of the year. He was at the February BSV workshop meeting just wandering about giving advice.
He is earning a living doing work at some of the local bonsai nurseries and private collections. I believe he will be available for people who wish to offer work. People could organize a group and pay him for the day as we did.

Yusuke will be up in Canberra from the 12th to the 26th, doing a number of demonstrations and workshops at the NBPCA, Canberra Bonsai Society, Weston Creek Bonsai Group, and Goulburn Bonsai Club. Yusuke is also available for private work while he is here.

I will be getting some private tuition, along with some show wiring, as I'm sure he is better at hiding it than I am!

Let me know if you are in the area and want some more info.

What a brilliant day it was... Everyone there had a great time and learned a lot.

If anyone is interested in arranging workshops or demo's with Yusuke, I am in daily contact with him and can pass on any requests. He is most interested in helping clubs/individuals with their trees and although he can work on all species, he describes himself as a conifer specialist.
