This is a field maple I got some time ago. Last week it started gowing brown on the leaves.I thought it was sunburn for the lovely weather Melb is getting but now I'm not so sure. Can anyone tell me for sure, is it just sun burn or do I have a problem :?: :?:

oh dude. I had some J. Maple's die recently from what I think was Verticillium Wilt. :palm: Yours looks similar. I'm really hoping it's not and one of the more seasoned bonsai dudes here can you tell it's something else. :fc: V Wilt sucks. No cure.

So it is doomed them :?: :?: Should I throw the whole thing out so it doesn't spread :?: :?: :?: Anyone else got a better diagnosis :fc:

If it is V wilt - burn it. But as i said above, i'm no expert at all, so let's wait to hear from a bonsai veteran as to what they think. But certainly looks like more than sunburn to me... :(

Hi John, I wouldn't go burning your maple just yet as it looks like that is what you have already done. To the leaves.

Cheers,
Mojo

So I have one saying burn it and one saying keep it :palm: Anyone else want to weigh in and split the tie. Don't really want to destroy a good tree but don't want to infect other trees either.

LOL maybe set up a happy medium, and quarrantine it? :P

Obviously I'm not that knowledgable, but I'd definatley be making sure that it wasn't leaf burn before I burnt it.

Just my :2c: :)

hey mate i don't know anything about this at all but i did some reading about this verticillium wilt on maples

if it is the wilt remove a heavily infected branch that you dont need or is about to die off anyway, make the cut and look at the rings if the cambium has turned brown from the fungus of the wilt then it's infected.
lets hope the cambium is still green :fc:

as jason said quarantine it, in semi to part shade preferably just in case it is just leaf burn
the wilt is a type of fungus
so try not to pass it on to other trees, there are lots of type of this wilt and the fungus is in the soil, so a bear rooting this re pot should help sorting that out

next thing it needs a good fertilise you need to grow to keep vigour and hold on until it does dormant, use a low nitrogen and high potassium fert
clean hands and tools after working on the tree and going to an uninfected tree,

i hope this helps!

in no way do i think i'm an expert i just did some quick research, if it were MY tree this is what i would do this is my :2c:

good luck and post your progress i'm interested to see how it turns out

cheers
matt

Thanks, I did see that when I looked it up . I have cut 5 of the worst effected branches and all are green right through. One of the branches had all leaves browned off but was still green, so maybe some hope yet.

I'm no expert but it looks like a climate induced issue. I would put it away from other maples just to be on the safe side, but I think its just an issue caused by cool weather, then very hot weather.

Google is our friend:
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=leaf+burn+maple

https://www.google.com.au/search?q=Verticillium+Wilt

Which does it look like? Pay attention to where on the leaf the damage occurs.

I used to burn Field Maples like that when I lived in Melbourne.

Cheers,
Mojo

Its not sunburn, but its actualy wind burn.

I live in Adelaide and was told I couldnt grow maples here...... they were wrong, but I get burnt leaves every summer and I havent had any spectacular autumn colouring like I see in the Adelaide hills.

I have many types of maples but I dont have field maples. I think I have around 12-15 types of maples and their cultivars.

I bought some Acer Shirasawanum "aureum" from Melbourne recently and they suffered wind burn almost immediately after arriving in Adelaide :palm:

I hope this helps

Thanks Mojo and Luke. I'm beginning to think it is not Verticillium Wilt. As I said I cut a few branches and even on the worst ones it was still green all the way through. I have now placed it in a shaded/ protected area away from the rest and will now treat it as sun/wind burn and see how it response. Thanks for those links Mojo. The brown on my leaves look more like the burnt leaves rather than the Verticillium Wilt damaged leaves. Come winter I will do a total bare root and wash of the roots then repot into new soil.
I'm feeling better already :fc: :tu:

Thanks for the replys.

My first impression was the same as Luke's... my maples used to get wind-burn as a matter of course.I now water at midday and mist the leaves and, placed in almost full sun, they show no signs of burn.
Misting during the hottest part of the day is the trick.
