Hi people.
How late is too late in the season to take cuttings of a C.Elm? I have a sacrifice branch on a training tree that would make a few nice little trees and was wandering if it was worth it?
Do I use bottom heat at all for elm's?
Any info or advise would be good.
Thanks

hey mate,
I have only done them in summer and they have taken very well. no bottom heat but I did put them in a plastic bag tied up for humidity. worked a treat. I would wait until spring/summer but if you are keen, then give it a go and post your results.

In Cairns, if you can grow Chinese Elm, I would reckon that you could strike cuttings almost year round.
Cheers,
Mojo

I'd agree with Mojo. In Cairns all year round. I have struck C. elm cutting as late as June in Rockhampton.

When ever I prune my Chinese elms I plant the intersting peices I cut off. Any time of the year, in winter I just use the bottom of a coke bottle as a cloch.( mini hot house) on a 40cm pot.
Strike rate of 98 percent with cuttings up too 2.5cm (1inch) using purple stiking jel, some time with out still the same results.

With regards to Chinese elms, you can get excellent root cuttings which make great long term bonsai material.

Hi BB,
I took some cuttings off my C.elm about 6 weeks ago and have had excellent results in early morning sun and the rest of the day in shade. I pulled one to see if there were roots and they were around an inch long plus what was left as I heard some snap, so depending on your location I would say that in the right conditions you stand a pretty good chance of success.
Cheers jason
