Is this an Olive?? Collected just in time

Hi All,

Quick back story, I was helping my brother inlaw remove about 3 ton of pavers from his new house to mine (not a fun job :shake: ) as they were re-doing their backyard. On about the third trip loading up the truck I noticed him pulling out a stump in the yard that he had trimmed back hard a few days earlier. I went over to have a look and asked what it was and he thought an Olive. I jumped on the chance of taking it as it still loooked to have a few feeder roots and a nice thick trunk, I thought it was worth trying to save since all the ectraction work was done for me :D I think I will be able to make a nice first branch out of the lower left one and create a new leader. It does have a few unsightly nodules but I will selectivly carve a few back to hollows to create that missing branch look.

Not sure what the success of it surviving is but hopefully it will be ok, I have taken the usual after care (Seasol soak, Shade etc) an potted it in a 50/50 mix Diatomite and Cactus style mix. As soon as it was out of the ground I put it in a bag, watered down and placed in the shade.

Anyway I have attached as many photos as possible to help identify the species, unfortunately there were no leaves od branches left to help. An ID would be awesome, I have been searching for an olive for ages and if this works out I will be one happy camper.

Hi Ryan1975b , mate i most certainly looks like and olive . If you try to cut it with a handsaw it gums up the teeth to the point where it wont slide through even on a small branch it becomes gummed up . Nice character it that there trunk .

Cheers Alpineart

It does look like an olive and olives survive anything. From being cut off at the base, too being cut in half. So your after care sounds good and its a good time to pull up an olive. Just keep the up to it and you should be happy.

Cheers, Yeh it did definitly gum up the saw when chopping the branch back. Guess I will have to sit back and relax and keep an eye on it :fc:

once it starts budding and gets some growth on it, i would look to develop a new root base half way up the trunk where all the bumps are....

The bullant's not to bad  , I thought I would have a little change from my standard Beer bottle or Dr Pepper to gage the size hehehe..

I can see where you are coming from with the new root line, I guess I will wait for it to back but and see what happens from there. I didn't mind the idea of reducing some of the bumps with carving to reduce the imact and add a bit of charaacter to the lower trunk line? But I will play this one by ear and see how the tree holds up first :D
