New to Bonsai, just got a Juniper tree

Hi Aus Bonsai :)

I've just gotten my first Bonsai tree, a lovely little juniper as seen below. I've been reading intensively about care taking and would appreciate some advice on location. Currently the tree is placed under our pergola in the backyard.

Here it receives really great filtered sunlight. I've read that Junipers can take full sunlight and enjoy the morning light. In that case, the only area of the house that can receive morning sunlight is on my window sill. The temperature may be more appropriate here since it's inside, however I know this isn't an indoor plant and the glass may take away from the UV digestion. If I leave it on the pergola all day, the afternoon sunlight is very strong and direct. Any advice on where I should place him would be much appreciated! Also I received it yesterday and there are a few brown/yellowish branches. Is this what is referred to as rust? The soil is definitely healthy and damp. Thanks so much for reading.

Tom

Welcome to the world of Bonsai :)

I'm in the same boat as you (new to bonsai, and just bought a juniper :P) so am not in the best position to offer advice. I have mine set up under the back patio in shade. I had it in full sun for a week, and it didn't seem to enjoy it very much... started to lose its nice green colour. So I've now put it under the patio, and its doing well so far.

I'm also wondering about the branches rusty colour too... I was just assuming it was due to the heat?

Welcome Tomricci to AusBonsai

Junipers will take, and need as much Sun as they can get, but they Must be kept outside. They also must be watered regularly so that when soild is nearly dried out they are rewatered.
I do mine daily in Winter, and 2 times a day thru summer

Thanks so much Ken! The soil seems to stay damp for quite a while and I think watering once a day would drown the tree. It's a hot day here today and I haven't watered, and the soil is still soft and wet from at least a day ago or more (I got it last night).
