Lavender Star Flower Cutting/Log

Had to cut back the Grewia in the front garden today and noticed this log on the ground afterwards. Thought it would look great if it could grow. I don't know how big a "cutting" can be if it is to work but thought I should at least give a go just for the heck of it. Would have been great to airlayer if I had noticed the potential of the shrub months ago.

The cutting is about 7-8cm across, I shaved back some of the bark at the bottom, soaked it in water for a while and then coated with rooting gel before planting. Does it have any hope?

I grabbed a few large ulmus suckers one I ripped out of the ground with next to nothing in the way of roots probably around 4-5cm across.
Scraped a bit away down the bottom and tried to expose a bit of cambium in a spot or two.
I just popped these into a propagating and sphagnum mix in a jiffy pot..
A few weeks later I notice some buds wanting to pop.

I've heard before that the less leaves the better sometimes..
So MAYBE I say MAYBE lose the rest of the leaves and flowers you see on the top?

What do others think?

I was thinking that the flowers would suck to much energy out of it, might cut them off in the morning. If it does grow i will have plenty of flowers in he future.
