hey everyone
at work today i came across this stump
it had fallen over and someone has come through and cut it with a chain saw
and left the stump

awesome for me

10 min with a hand saw and a pinch bar and it was out
very sandy soil but it held together which was nice
there is some new growth at the top near the cut
the dimensions are roughly 180mm at the base and 250mm from soil level but
i haven't cleared away the top soil to root level yet
it is a eucalyptus of some description when i go back ill take a photo
of a tree next to it that i think is the same
the roots that are there are very course and from 20mm to 50mm thick
and the widest part of the root ball is around 300mm
i was thinking of leaving the sandy soil and course roots for a year or 2
and see if it lives and deal with them then
what do you all think?
any advice welcome

Pot it up and leave it till next year before doing anything, If it grows and kickes on in the next few months you can start to think about it. Next year you can repot and sort out any big ugly roots,and then decide the form the tree will take.
ie can you tilt it?
any big roots that make a particular side the front.
Any die back or dead bits to carve and use.

but i was talking to a horticulturist from work and he asked
me how the potting of that stump went an i told him i found
a small grub in the soil but i didnt remove all the soil
from the root ball so i dont know if there was more
an he said oh ok and got a photo on his phone up an said did it look
like this and i said
hey! yes it is how did you know?
then he said its a curl grub and thats not too good its eating
your roots

any suggestions on what i should do?
take it back out of the pot and remove all the soil?
i'm a little nervous about doing this i know ill screw it up
and remove a heap of roots unintentionally,
or should i use a pesticide?
i have no experience with curl grubs

Dont worry too much about it mate at this point, Its obvious the tree is surviving so let it be for now. Im not saying curlgrubs are a good thing but you are right to assume messing with it now could be alot worse. Summer is coming now curl grubs turn into beetles and hopefully move on. I once had 16 of them in a 8" pot. Yes the tree was wobbly but didnt die. Get your self an enginers scribe or a long metal skewer and from time to time stick deep into your soil all around the pot and girate and wobble. This will keep your soil uncompacted at the same time if there are more grubs you might neckm while doing this. BUT for now leave it alone!

The thing I know that will get rid of grubs is to submerge the pot in a tub of water so that the soild os covered and leave to soak for a few hours. this is a low impact method to be rid of them.

i think ill try and submerge it tomorrow, when i figure out what ill put it in to do it
the pot it 500mm in diameter ill figure something out haha
when it shows more signs of life ill post an update but until then
