Here is a Scots pine I purchased recently. It has lots of problems but has a good base, thickness and taper.

I might wait until I head up next month, I think it would be easy to discuss the tree and potential mistake I would make if it belonged to me...

Hi all,

I have lived with this tree for a few years now and finally made up my mind as to what to do.

I have tidied up the suface roots and gotten it into good health.

New angle shows the lovely lower trunk nicely.

Wow Scott, that is pretty extreme..I thought Grant meant he would just gradually reduce the size of the needles..

Here is where I am going.

I have constricted the stump with copper wire to stop it bleeding and started to wire the remaining branches.

Hi Grant,

"Good cut" man! You see the tree really compact and in a dynamite pot?

Looking forward to seeing and the tree soon.

Peter Adams

Nice Grant
I think the more we see this sort of drastic work the more we will improve our Skills, techniques and vision across the broad spectrum of Bonsai Practitioners in OZ :-)

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the comment. Looking forward to seeing you in Canberra soon; right in the middle of winter!

I will certainly do a workshop with you.

Nice cut, certainly focusses attention on the shape in the low trunk. Will you be fattening the branch/trunk, or cutting shari into the trunk?

Hi Gavin

i intend to fatten up the new trunk extension but no jin or shari. The wood on this one is very soft; which makes it good for bending the new apex into shape but not for jin or shari.

I hope to get it done this Easter/Anzac day very long weekend but I am also building a shed for all my gear.
