Picked these up yesterday for a bit of fun. Just for a bit of fun really. Who knows, they might be something special one (like 10 yrs time).

Hi Josh , from little things big things grow , even idea's . It good to see someone post a simple $5 trainer in 5 minutes time , just goes to show you don't have to spend big bucks to get good results . . Its the achievement that is more rewarding than the purchase . Well bone .

I agree Alpine, one can learn a lot from these sorts of exercises and are very useful to keep one interested whil learning

They are what we call, Sticks in pots, but they are your own work and will teach you how to keep a tree healthy in a small pot with little risk, and then to learn to wire and shape a tree how you wish

Hi Josh , don't listen to kc , mate my sticks in pots don't look like that . At least yours have a bit of character mine look like Sticks in pots . There's more character in them than some of my trainers .

Thanks guys, this was really just for a bit of fun but after planting them thought it would be good to have a play so wired them. That was fun These will sit on the bench and I'll play with them as they grow. I have a few plants that are experimental. One of my bosses years ago told me "A mistake is only a mistake if you don't learn anything from it, if you learn something then it is a lesson". (I had lots of lessons in that job ) So I figure a few pots like this to learn from will be good. So if i kill them now it will be a lesson
By the way Ken, this is a stick in a pot given to me by my mother for my birthday and Ken if you can guess what it is I'll give you bonus points

Well done Ken, it is Acer palmatum. I think it has a year or two before I start wiring the branches My plan is to grow it on and one day it will take pride of place on the bench as the stick that mum bought I figure my grandchildren can enjoy it.

Here is one that started as a stick in a pot. When I looked at it last year suddenly it started to look worth playing with.

While we're being permissive about sticks in pots, here's one of mine (complete with Pup-spec AA battery). It's a cutting which I took late summer and seems to be surviving despite the odds. No nebari, no ramification, no taper.

Also bonus points if you can guess what it is.

It's still winter - the elms here have no leaves. It's evergreen
Clue - It's a weed and the local name confuses it's country of origin.

If it is, there are quite a few very nice ones around as Bonsai.

Close but no banana - originally from south america and is a weed in at least three states - grows into a tree with edible drupes
