Went for a stroll today in my break under the large figs around work and found two self sown little figs its a well traveled area but with all the rain its become soft so most avoid it . But on my wonder I found 2 little self sown ficus so I removed them before they got trampled or moved here is a pic of one. Photo taken on my phone and posterised so you can actually see the trunk looks like its already been trampled a few times

just got home and potted both into a small foam grow box put both in and will re pot come October and warmer weather. gave each a good seasol bath and put out in the rain might have to replace potting mix around my future root over turtle... I know im doing a lot of things in an odd way if it doesn't work ill try again later. As i said these were destined to be mowed trampled or plucked so hopefully ill help them to survive a bit better than that. new pics added. the turtle whose head you can barley see poking out from below is a terracotta garden ornament i picked up if successful this fig will be for my son we have nicknamed turtle. He is only 16months old so not much older than the seedling really.

Jas, I have a self sown Ficus rubiginosa that was collected & planted in my garden about 9mths ago. I know your eager to hook in but wait till late august and your welcome to dig it & we can get it settled on the turtle. Definitely not a fig. It has opposite leaves, figs have alternate leaves. One test is to look if it has white, milky sap. Could be Pittosporum or maybe even a Cheese tree (Glochidion ferdinandi.)

Think your right on both accounts Hackimoto one of each after looking at the photos and not wondering around in half dark then googleing see what happens when u get lack of sleep and do things that seem great at the time grrr...... so ......Bonsai or bin guys ... If i bonsai and they die then we have bin still later .... remove turtle through fro MattA's kind offer
PS Matt i have some more pottery related gifts for you will move others with that ornamental ginger to under my balcony the boy they were in will be destroyed in this rain... feel free to drop over Monday or Tuesday to collect.

The other test if a found seedling is a fig, or not, is where you found it. Almost without exception a most fig will NEVER germinate on the soil or ground. It has little hooks(for grasping) on the seed and has to be exposed to light and will germinate in rock crevices, between bricks, on old tree stumps, in the back of epiphytic ferns, in potted plants, high in tree tops on the bark, but never on the ground. When growing seed you scatter them on the potting mix, they germinate. Bury them and they don't. So if you found them growing out of the soil chances are they are not figs.

Hi All,
Moved my Pittosporum and my Cheese tree (Glochidion ferdinandi) to seperate smaller pots last night.... Went for a walk in my break again around work looking in more likley places found two little saplings (45cmish and 70cmish) growing straight out of an unused outside corner of the building between cement path and the brick wall... Hmmm thats a check looked at bases fat little starts long main stem alternate leaves ...check....oblong little bit glossy... check... snap head of taller ...white sap check.... chance of easy removal and salvaging roots unlikley ... will wait till October but think i might bring camera cutters and and wire to work tomorrow morning to help get them read for October collection

bit further down also found what looks to be a very young wisteria coming out from between more bricks and cement walk...

will post photos of all for identification correctly on Monday if not Sunday night

100 per cent a fig. It wouldn't hurt to put some soil around it if you can. I've found the best way to collect a fig like that is to use a knife or paint scraper to hammer between the trunk and the brick on both sides and just cleanly sever it from the wall. In October it will re-shoot very quickly. Make sure that you cut back all foliage at the same time. Good luck.
