They make fantastic bonsai but our climate in australia does not suit them regardless of location maybe the exception tasmania. They hate heat and i mean above early 30's ,hot wind and need a cold winter. Japanese larch are hardier but even them you have to watch in summer . repot and heavy prune to be carried out late winter b4 bud swell.

during summer we'll definitely get above the early 30's for at least a few days in a row, one day this summer just gone hit 39... but I have no doubt you could keep one alive down here and I'm sure at least one person would be, at the very least because bugger me it gets cold, for most of the time. It's actually pretty bleak as I type this. Damn it. I'm sick of this.
(No doubt another tassie member will post pictures of their larch thriving, just give it time)
So basically redwood man you're more than welcome to ship it down!

Haha. They are a very nice looking tree indeed, and I would've paid $60 for that guy no problemo. If I had it to spare (attn: mods, need a facepalm smiley).
What's your plan for it? A nice tasty layer in the middle of the trunk there at the bend would give you two, in my opinion, nice potential bonsai. Even more of a steal at $30 each. Mind you take it with a grain of salt, I don't actually have any idea what I'm talking about - does a larch backbud? Could you force some shoots out of the lower trunk?

Just putting up a couple of photos of my Japanese Larch and European Larch and maybe we can get a comparison. If you can give us a closeup of yours that would help me out. Thanks Redwood. Mine are just starting to turn.
being able to compare them now, mine might just have denser foliage than yours
