Hi All,

Well some people either Like them or Loathe them but I thought I would have a go at one since I'm interested in all styles of bonsai. Also I thought it was a very intesting techniquye for quick development. Anyway I have attached a series of 3 photo of my Tanuki progression beiging in November 2010. So far I think it is starting to have some direction, although I nee to grow out the top a lot more on both trunk. I think the general shape is starting to for. My idea is to try ans finish the crown back a little from the last dead wood.

The link below is my original post on my technique for setting up the deadwood and potting if your interested.

I do not mind Tanuki at all and that is a lovely piece of wood. I think this will come up a treat Ryan. I dont know why you did not graft to the side though . It would be cool if you could see the live wood attached to the stump when viewed from the front :?:

I have to agree with Bodhi, the deadwood in tanuki isn't meant to hide the tree but, inhance the tree. This will probably look fine in a couple of years, but I would have liked it more, if I could see a live vein. JMO.

Its a very valid point. I think I went for the easy approach on this one as there was more character in the front of the deadwood but a perfect section at the back that allowed for the truck plus root space. I totally agree through, but hopfully in the futer once both viens develop a bit more they will become a little more promenant??

I call the piece of wood the sweeping Dragon...hehe... or lizard...If you look closely you can see the head neck and the forming of a wing. Or maybe I have just been watching to many cartoons lately. You can also make a few othe retilian like face from the other piece, I think :D

Hi Ryan , mate i love these tanuki , i have done numerous in the past and will be creating a few more with Sabina's in training Now . I have a few Shimpaku's growing on that need an over haul for the first time . Keep at it , there's nothing like creating a unique piece , especially if it has appeal and balance as this one does.

To many cartoons  When looking at images on the net there are some really nice examples and tend to look better with age I think.
Someone new to bonsai would have no idea that the dead wood and living tree are not one of the same. good luck with it
