I've just started on those two.
One will be [ I hope ] a Shito (5–10 cm) Boxwood Bunjin.

Hi there,

I really like your drawing of what your tree will eventually look like. I am pretty inexperienced bonsai grower so please take my opinion at its level. but what I think your tree is a little young to be styled. it has no taper and is very thin giving an impression of a young sapling rather than a tree. I would remove the wire and raffia and put it in the ground or growbox and just let it grow wild for a few years. But I don't know much about Box Wood and am only going on advice given to me about other trees like Junipers and Figs, namely, if you want to grow a thick trunk and lots of foliage and branches, then growing in ground/boxes is the way to go. I guess it depends on what you want to do and if you are happy with your tree as it is then its all good. Personally though, I would opt for the growing out option because you will have a much better bonsai in the end just my as a beginner.

I know near nothing about Buxus so Forgive me if i'm wrong but your tree looks alot like Murraya,?

Adrian you have missed the point, Shito is only 7 to 10 cm. So it is small and being Bunjingi/literati it does not need taper, as much as other trees.

I to have my doubts of it being Buxus.

Sorry about the boxwood name, that's the name its given here or "Buis" in french.
It might be a "Murraya" - I'll try to get a shot at the leaves and bark to help identification. Its not a curry tree though.


@ADO : I've placed the first one back in full earth [ see last pic for the first one ] to boost growth temporarily.
But i'm trying to achieve a Shito (5–10 cm) Bunjin / Literati on the first one. I dont want it to put too much thickness for now.
Bunjin don't really need any nebari [ though one would be nice ]. The forms are usually feminine and slim.

I've never said, implied or taken your post as negative. I've posted those here to get feedback. Your post was interesting and very positive advice.

I also see yo have found some wire of differing sizes too and the use of raffia and nice wiring to get the bends you want is good.

Yeps managed to get a slightly thicker wire, its a bit hard, so I'm giving it a try with a staight wire wrapped in raffia followed by wirering the branch afterwards.
I'll see what results I'll get from this approach.
Did it on only those two tree so far.

I've checked out a bit on buxus and murraya.
Seems that its indeed NOT a buxus [ sorry for the mislabel ]
And might be a murraya - though i've not been able to pin point the exact var.

I'll try to post some closeups during the weekend or tomorrow to help / finalise identification.

Is there anymeans to change the main topic's title?
I'd be a waste to lead people here when they are looking for buxus species info.

Gee...it kinda looks like an Ash I have (Fraxinus) which I have been training from a seedling for a few years (will post some photos when brave enough!)

Leaves are very similar, but the Ash throws out "double leaves" (which keeps me, as a book trained bonsai lover, often confused!!).

You will conquer it mate.
