Hi all,
Here is a Black pine that was given to the NBPCA in 2007 as potential material for future demonstrations at the NBPCA.

It was only in moderate health but over the next few years we fed the tree .

It was repotted this time last year, March 2011

Grant,
I assume that the tree has mostly just been fed and allowed to grow to gain strength?
The first few pics show many bare branches, have you attempted to chase back any of the foliage...have you experienced much back budding?

Hi Scott,
A fair ammount of back budding has occured and over the years the branches have been shortened where this occured. There are many fine branches internally that have survived quite well also.
This tree has had some work done on it yesterday and today and photographed. We needle plucked and thinned; plus took off one major branch. It will never be a small compact tree unless we chose to graft on new leader and branches.
If we can have it ready for next year; now that the official opening date has been announced; we may be able to use it as part of the opening period goings on.
With your expertise in pines I would be happy if you would like you to become involved .

I already know you will remove the first branch. This is excellent stock and you will convert it into a masterpiece, Grant.

Hi Brian,
You could be 100% correct.
I feel that in demonstrations you should not try to do everything on the one day; for the health of the tree.
Here we will be able to show the progression over a number of years of this tree and then do the next major stage..
The tree is now in good health and the lower branch would have continued to thicken the lower portion of the tree; so off it came.
We will do candle removal in November and hopefully get a tree full of nice new short candle growth; warm weather hopefully next summer.
This summer has been a shocker in Canberra; too cool and wet; but everwhere else (except WA) seems to have had that this year

Grant,
How many more trees will be on display in the new area?

Hi Mick,
In our Current set up we can have 30 to 32 trees depending on their size.
At the new location we can have on display approximately 70 trees; once again depending on their size.
We will have an area dedicated to smaller trees so, depending on the mode of display, the numbers could vary a lot.
