Banksia serrata 5 years on

This serrata would be the only one I have bought as a Bonsai. I bought it from Cambewarra Nursery in 2004. It was one of the then owners collected trees. Over the years I have tried to refine it. As you can see by the photos I have taken it further along that path.

Sorry about the first photo, it is the only early photo I could find. (From the ANBG website)

The Tree is 60cm high x 60cm wide

Lovely Tree peter and nice work to improve it

Have you ever had any thought to moving the apex to the left?
This would put it more directly over the base and more balanced?

Very fine - the branches are muscling up very well indeed. Would you consider building/bringing the apex more to the right? There seems to be a strong sideways movement to the base of the trunk, and the top could complement that.

Or you could tell us both to rack off and keep it as it is, a stately and refined bonsai banksia.

Is it going in the show?

Gavin,

It was offered but rejected. ( I feel like John West)

As always I will take on board the advice, as their is always merit in what other eyes see.

Well done Peter.
If that is one of the rejects the standard must be pretty high this year so definitely worth travelling a bit to see the show - this weekend at Canberra

Here is a spin on the earlier suggestions. I have rotated the pot and moved a few things around. I think it is a little better.

I have one with very similar structure to this one ;)
Will start to model mine to yours I think :tu: Mine just needs a little more movement on the upper trunk come to think now...

Thanks Peter for the idea and pics.

Lovely tree Peter :tu: I have just lost another stock serrata and wallum - the only banksia that seem to thrive for me is integrifolia. Do you know if the serrata is better suited to colder climates ?

Hi Tony,

The serrata is common on our south coast and inland on the ranges. They could have issues with high humidity in your area. Mine tend to struggle a bit with the frosts.

Peter

Peter

I dont have any in a pot as yet but 4 shohin in the ground started 5 years ago . im defiantly liftin them this year I havent noticed any frost damage as yet (we did gey -7 for a few days here couple years ago) but they are also abit protected from larger serrata i left as a garden tree . I have coastal bankias as well but suprisingly i found the serrata to be more complying with bonsai cultivation and that trunk does swell fast :D :D :D :D
