Well this is my very first try at this & yes it has worked. This gum was collected in 1988 from out near the Ross Hinze Dam, can not remember who took a few of us melbourne bonsai folk out after a Bonsai seminier, the same time as the world Expo was on & I was lucky enough to fine this little beauty b4 the rest of the crew got to it, I just moved it to this pot only because the pot that it was in was very shollow & the tree had been in that same pot since mid 1989, so October 2011 I slip potted it into this pot with some fresh soil, most of my tree's have neglected over the last 12 year's but now I have that Bonsai Bug back look out, please feel free to make some comments. it very different . is it a natural australian plant? would look nicer if it had branchs more like a tree i thinks.

I'm not sure but it could be an Angophora Costata (Or Smooth Bark Apple) There is another 3oomm of tree above what you can see in the photo & there are more branchs on it but as I said through Neglect the top grow a bit high & since it's onley been 4 month's since i've been working on to try & get some growth lower down the trunk it look's abit light on so give it time & we'll see what happen's.

I was there when you dug it up. We were at the bonsai conference in Brisbane. There was world expo 88 happening so it was a fun time for our Melbourne bonsai group.
I'm surprised you have kept it alive all those years. I think you should give it to Alpine as he will style it for you.

how long deos it take to get one of these gum trees to look good? are they good for use as bonsai. i think i have some of them near me i could dig up.

The trunk is as it was when I dug it up mayb just got a bit fatter, I have been pinching the tips out every 3 0r 4 day's trying to get it to bud back & it seam's to be working ok so far, hoping over the next few year's it will turn into something worth looking at, I have a few Idea's in my head that might make it a very nice tree so keep watching this space,

Hi Tiny
Many of the Euc / Corymbia family look Great as Bonsai. They are mostly Quick growers and will back bud readily. they are relatively easy to collect. The leaves readily reduce in size.
Please remember not to take from the bush as it is illegal.

Not sure if I remember you on that trip up to brisbane, but we had permisson from big Ross Hinze to go out there & take what we liked so that's not illegal if he said so, So there's no jail time for The Hacker
