hi everyone, for about 15 years,i thought this tree was a white pine, mainly because it was a pale looking green,i had no idea how to tell,till i went on this GREAT site,, (no fert for 15 years) now after its first growing season,with plenty of charlie carp, its now gone much darker, looks like my other mugos,that i aquired this year,except for the colour of the trunk,, is this a mugo pine ,, also ,any ideas to where i should go with this, i was thinking of chopping below the 2 top branches, thanks in advance...Joe

I'm no pine expert, but I think Mugo. White pine has 5 needles and I really couldn't tell by the photos, but it certainly didn't look like 5 needles to me.

Hi Fex , mate , it could be a mugo or 1 of the many variant's . Its hard to tell from a tree with such little natural growth . I do see a nice 5 trunk raft in there if one was willing to look a little closer and consider something a bit different , and be willing to challenge oneself .

Im thinking it`s a mugo, but what a mugo !!

I have NEVER seen such an upright specimen, such as this.

In saying would you consider compressing the trunk somewhat, to keep the taper, but give movement ?

This may just give enough shape to get away from the apparent bar branching, ( not bar but close enough ).

Otherwise, I am with Alipne with the thought of a raft.

For a tree of this age, lets give it a direction and a new life ?

wow,raftstyle? never even considered it,,,,, till now ,that is... thats gonna have me thinking for ages,, i know one thing though,i won't hurry it, its waited 20years, whats a few more.. what a great idea Alpineart, something to consider... cheers..Joe

hi paulC,, i definately think it needs some serious twisting and turning, i don't like the lanky bit at the top, there was a branch there ,in the middle of the top two, falling branch,broke it off, thats why i wanted to chop,, tree does need a new direction real bad, i was thinking of making a mock up of the tree and practice twisting it to a new style so as not to stress it with multiple bending . ive not sat down with it long enough to find a tree in there somewhere, its time to start ,i reckon...all ideas welcome.......... cheers Joe
