Hi Guys,

I have had a look through the threads and do apologise if I have missed anything
I have recently come into the posession of a japanese larch, tis a potplant at this stage about 1meter in height.
The only information I have gathered is that it is a deciduous species.

Any other information will be greatly appreciated on this species and if it will make a good bonsai candidate.
Will post some pics in the next day or so.

Larix kaempferi. Yes it is used for bonsai. I have seen some great pics of it as bonsai from Japan but I have not grown it. Spring growth is really impressive - needles opening a brilliant light green then fading to darker green as they mature. Good find I'd say.
From memory it has longer needles than the European larch which also makes excellent bonsai.

I really like these JLs.. I had bought one from the nursery as prebonsai stock and absolutely love the bright lime color foliage.

I took it home and eagerly prune shaped it and reported it (early spring as you would).. now its good as gone ??

So be careful.. not sure what I did wrong ?

I bought one in spring as nursery stock, I reported and cut down low, it is going well but grows quite slow. I had used the cuttings and about 50% took.

i have 2, a fairly young shohin one and a larger one.watch HOT windy weather they hate it, my larger one got trapped by a week of 38 and didnt like it at all, buds look fine but needles aint so good. the shohin one hasent missed a beat and i cut of 70% of the root mass to get it into its little pot 2 winters ago. i have 4 i planted into the garden. ones in dapled shade and protection from wind doing much better than the overs. they need sub zero and frost to perform best
